Jean Le Clerc (1657-1736) was a Protestant theologian and pastor. He was a member of the Remontrants, disciples of Arminius, breaking with Calvinism on questions of grace and predestination. The lottery and games of chance, then very popular in the Netherlands, were an ideal subject for reflection on these subjects. By rejecting any idea of an "invisible hand" behind chance or good fortune, he ends up with an ultimately very modern definition of chance:
"Tous ces mots ne sont que des termes négatifs, comme je l'ai dit, & qui ne servent qu'à faire comprendre que l'effet, dont on parle, n'est pas la production d'une cause nécessaire & déterminée à la produire".
In other words, we speak of chance where we do not know the sum of the causes that determine the effect that we observe.

The Coustumes de Paris, revised in 1605, constitute the body of legal texts which will apply to the jurisdiction of the Parliament of Paris (and therefore almost to all of France) until the drafting of the Napoleonic Civil Code. They are, moreover, one of the major sources of inspiration for the Civil Code.

Pierre de Besse, preacher from the beginning of the 17th century was inspired by the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, whose legend, peddled by Diogenes Laerce, said that he was perpetually in tears in front of the fate of men to draw from it a Christian Heraclitus desperate for the sins of the Men.
He will publish 3 years later the "Christian Democrite" showing a hilarious Democrite in front of the world as it is.
These two books did a lot to popularize the archetypes of a weeping Heraclitus and a laughing Democritus, which can be found in many works of art throughout the 17th century. One thinks in particular of the "Weeping Philosopher" of Rubens painted around 1636, or the Democrites of Velasquez and Rembrandt.

Gabriel Bonnot de Mably was Condillac's brother, although today less known than his parent, his innovative work of political philosophy places him among the precursors of what will become communism. In particular, he proposed to limit land ownership rights.
As a fine geopolitical analyst, he published his Treaty of Negotiations at the start of the Seven Years' War, after the overthrow of the alliance which will set Europe (and the world) on fire.
"His concepts of power, of world legal order, of moralizing the relations between people, peoples and states, undoubtedly still have a lot to teach us." Florence Gauthier, Extract from the preface for the reissue of the text in 2003
Our copy bearing the arms of Emmanuel Dieudonné de Hautefort (1700-1777), a diplomat who was french ambassador to Vienna from 1749 to 1752 and who was therefore at the heart of European diplomacy in this troubled period of the 18th century. It was indeed during this period that negotiations between France and Austria began to initiate a European diplomatic revolution.

After the end of the Middle Ages when prices reached historically low levels, the 16th century was marked by historic price inflation.
In 1563 the Paris Chamber of Accounts undertook a study on the "increase in the price of all things" in relation to "the depreciation of currencies", which gave rise to the controversy between Malestroit ("Les paradoxes du seigneur de Malestroict sur le faict des monnoyes ", 1566) and Jean Bodin (Response to the paradoxes of M. de Malestroict, 1568).
Our booklet, attributed to Bernard de Girard du Haillan who was finance secretary to the Duke of Anjou, feeds into this debate.
Haillan defines seven causes causing the rise in prices (instead of the 4 retained by Bodin). The first of these being the abundance of gold in Europe.
"The first cause, therefore, of dearness is the abundance of gold and silver, which in this Kingdom is greater than it ever was."
In fact, since the beginning of the 16th century, thanks to their conquests in the Americas, Spain and Portugal have doubled the quantity of gold circulating in Europe.
To the abundance of gold is added for Haillan the monopolies of the Merchants, the increase in international trade, the consumption of luxury by the Princes, it thus overlaps the 4 causes of the dearness defined by Bodin in 1568. But he adds : An overconsumption of wine and meat which nibbles the agricultural surface allocated to other foodstuffs; the increase in taxes which weigh on the peasants decreases the areas under cultivation; the periods of infertility that France had just experienced in previous years.
In fact, we find in Haillan's text all the terms of the quantitative theory of money as it will be formalized in 1910 by Fisher (MV = PY) who relates the price level to the quantity of money exchanged and resource production.
These debates around the high cost will lead during the Etats généraux of 1577 to the testing of the establishment of a monetary policy and the adoption of the Ecu as the currency for kingdom account. ("M. de Malestroit and the quantitative theory of money", Revue économique, 1987, 38-4, pp. 853-876).

Monumental impression for the description of the Moulins bridge built from 1754 to 1762 under the direction of Louis de Règemortes, engineer of bridges and roads: Plans, sections, elevations and maps.
Note the impressive fifth plank measuring over 1.80m long representing the foundations of the bridge.
"The work that has illustrated his name is the construction of the Moulins bridge, for which several unsuccessful attempts had been made in the previous century. The success of the project drawn up by Louis de Règemorte is mainly due to the establishment of a general masonry base. , strongly defended against the action of water, with unsinkable longitudinal levees attached to the wedges, to prevent the disastrous effect of scouring and flooding which had brought the ruin of the works undertaken on the same point from 1679 to 1689. " Tarbé de Saint-Hardouin (Biographical notes on the engineers of the bridges and roads since the creation of the body, in 1716, until our days, Baudry, 1884)
The now "Pont Règemortes" still crosses the Allier more than 250 years more late proof of the success of the engineer.
