After experimental aerodynamic tests obtained by free fall from the second floor of the tower he had built on the Champ de Mars in Paris, Gustave Eiffel had a wind tunnel built there in 1909. It was made up of a vein of tests of 3 meters in diameter over a length of 2.5 meters. The flow, generated by a propeller driven by a 70hp engine, could vary between 5 and 20 meters per second. The installation was enclosed in a 240 square meter hangar so as not to be influenced by the outside wind. This installation was used, in particular, for testing the Eiffel wing profiles which would equip a large number of French aircraft from the First World War. It was moved to Auteuil in 1912 and is still in operation today, operated by the Aérodynamic Eiffel company.

Set of 27 lithographic courses given at the Central School of Pyrotechnics during the year 1875-1876.
The courses were attended by François Mazeau, deputy chief pyrotechnician at the 21st artillery, 12th battery in Angoulème.
The 21st artillery was formed during the siege of Paris in 1870. The war of 1870 marked the defeat of the French artillery, which was surpassed by the much more modern and organized German artillery. The reform of the central school of pyrotechnics moved from Metz to Bourges was one of the first reforms of the French army after this defeat. The French artillery, particularly with the 75 cannon, became one of the most efficient during the First World War.
The first course is devoted to the use of dynamite, invented a few years earlier by Nobel.

In the first part Dutens explains his system of classification whereby the finest and most durable of gemstones are dubbed "oriental" while those of lesser quality and hardness receive the title of "occidental," thus perpetuating in a highly popular and widely distributed work these unfortunate and misleading terms that persisted in use well into the last century. Some generalities on gemstones also appear here as curious lore, origin of gemstones, and other topics, followed by separate chapters on the major gemstones beginning with diamond. The latter chapter records recent experiments in France and elsewhere on the combustibility of diamond, one such experiment he personally observed. The second part describes lesser gemstones, mainly massive types, used mostly in cabochons or in the manufacture of small to large ornamental articles or decorations.

Second edition.
A new edition by Claude Antoine Jombert, who had just acquired the original copperplates from the descendants of the architect.
Antoine Desgodetz was sent to Rome, where he stayed for sixteen months in 1676–1677, to survey and measure ancient monuments with great precision. The purpose was well conceived, as he had already observed discrepancies in the dimensions—and thus the proportions—given in classical works on the subject.
The result was a work of obvious utility and great beauty: Desgodetz’s drawings were engraved by excellent artists, including Louis de Chastillon, Nicolas Guérard, and Jean and Pierre Lepautre. Each plate is accompanied by a facing descriptive notice specifying the measurements of the various elements and pointing out the errors in earlier treatises.
The work was justly admired and underwent several reissues. It is all the more surprising to learn that, unlike most ancient treatises, it has not lost its value: even today’s archaeologists—far more demanding than the amateurs of the past—still recognize its accuracy and usefulness.
A complete copy, with all 137 required plates.
DELAMBRE, Jean-Baptiste Joseph || JANVIER, Antide.

Rare booklet probably published by Antide Janvier in which he reproduces the minutes of a session of the Academy of Sciences in which Delambre acts as rapporteur for the reading of his work: "Revolutions of the Celestial Bodies by the Mechanism of the Cogs ". Janvier adds some comments in footnotes in which we sense his bitterness that the Institute did not judge his book worthy of being sent to universities for study. He is saddened that they preferred to give four thousand francs to the miller Girardot for his uranographic machine. Janvier was one of the most brilliant watchmakers of his time, famous in particular for his spheres and planetaries.
