LASSUS, Jean-Baptiste-Antoine || DARCEL, Alfred.
Album de Villard de Honnecourt.
Paris, Imprimerie impériale, 1858.
More Details >
750 €
Beautiful facsimile reproduction of the famous manuscript of Villard de Honnecourt, a 13th-century architect.
This manuscript, preserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, is a valuable source on the construction techniques and know-how of medieval builders. It contains sketches and notes that reveal the empirical and artistic approach to Gothic architecture. Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus, architect and fervent defender of the revival of medieval art in the 19th century, annotated this publication, which was then finalized by Alfred Darcel after his death.
The work is part of the movement of rediscovery and promotion of Gothic heritage, led in particular by Viollet-le-Duc and his contemporaries.

Edition enriched with engravings.
Ramsay highlights the life of Turenne, his campaigns during the Thirty Years' War, his victories at the battles of Rocroi, the Dunes, and Salzbach. He also describes his relations with Louis XIV, his role within the French army, and his influence on modern warfare. Ramsay attempts to pay tribute to Turenne's greatness, while evoking his human and military qualities.
The work is also a reflection on the art of war at that time and on the political and military issues of the time of Louis XIV. This work is part of the classic historiography on Marshal Turenne.

Work by Jean-Dominique Cassini (known as Cassini IV) who wrote this manual the day after his trip to Italy in 1775.
Cassini regretted that most authors on Italy sometimes digressed without having left their salons. On the contrary, he wanted to offer a practical manual for travelers:
"this little work, whose sole purpose is to be useful to travelers. It teaches the routes, warns of obstacles; indicates the means; teaches what is to be seen, what can be neglected." (extract from the preface).

Handwritten copy of a work published anonymously by Pierre Marteau in 1688. Barbier attributes the book to Gratien de Courtilz but adds: "Dubious".
The content is rather discourteous towards the monarchs, of whom inglorious episodes are recounted: the lack of merit of Louis XIII (Richelieu having governed for him), Louis XIV preferring the beds of his mistresses to the battlefields... This doubtless explains why handwritten copies were able to circulate under the cloak of the laughers. In fact, two other similar handwritten copies can be found in public libraries.
What remains is a very pretty manuscript, in a perfectly legible late 17th century handwriting.

In this work, the author makes a biting satire of the government, religion and morals of the Spanish. King Charles III complained to the French government and threatened to close the entrance to his kingdom to all French people. Parliament ordered, in February 1786, that a copy of "Voyage en Espagne" would be delivered to the flames by the hand of the executioner. This auto-da-fé delighted de Langle who had written: "My work will surely be reduced to ashes: so much the better! (...) It brings good luck; the public likes burnt works.".
