This book is a satire of the political and gallant intrigues of the court of Louis XIV, in the form of false "Mémoires" (Persia becomes France and all the protagonists are named with oriental names). The key to the understanding is given at the end of the text.
In reality, this satirical book deals with the History of France and Europe from the death of Louis XIV to the reign of Louis XV.
It is also the first book, in which the story of the famous "Iron Mask" is mentionned.
Following the publication, the author was jailed in La Bastille.

Pasted on the guard is a handwritten letter signed by Jean Paulhan addressed to Aimé Blanc-Dufour.
Aimé Blanc-Dufour had signed an article "Reflections on Jean Paulhan and rhetoric" in September 1946 in Cahiers du sud, Jean Paulhan responded to it on his relationship to rhetoric.
“Secret society, no doubt. And I believe, in this sense also, that Rhéto holds a secret, touching the relationships between language and thought…”.

The National Writers' Committee is an organ of the literary resistance, an emanation of the National Writers' Front, close to the French Communist Party.
Led by Aragon, the committee brings together many great French authors.
This publication in the aftermath of the war aims, through the example of an “ordinary” French village, at the abuses committed by the Nazis. Thus, Plomion in Aisne, where on August 31, 1944 fourteen inhabitants aged 16 to 72 were shot by the SS.
The photos of the victims are accompanied by a text by Henry Malherbe and a poem by Paul Claudel. Amusing send-off from one of the most fervent communist writers to the one who was on the front page of Le Figaro for decades.

In particular 4 pages at the end of the book in which he returns to some biographical details and he reproduces a letter received on the anniversary of his retirement: "Some time later, I received from playwrights belonging to the French Academy the following letter which touched me very much, but I did not think I should let it be published "

The dedication sheet to Mme Escalier née Regnier, daughter of the actor was cut out. Probably after the divorce of Henriette Regnier who will marry in second marriage Alexandre Dumas fils.
The frontispiece portrait is Martial. The book is completed by two etchings by Leon Gaucherel, which were engraved for a collection on the comedians of the Comédie Française and a vintage albumen photo of Regnier at his desk.
