This book is the result of his research, which aimed to analyze the different components of human tissues and those of animals. The atlas illustrates more than 1000 crystals observed under the microscope and which are parts of the tissues studied. Out of 26 plates of the atlas are watercolored by hand.

Before Jenner discoveries about vaccine, this medical technique was the only way to prevent an endemic and deadly disease like smallpox. In the second half of the XVIIIth century the inoculation for smallpox became a discussed practice, able to involved in the debate not only the scientific community but also the social and political milieu. Gatti arrived in Paris in 1760 where he became famous thanks to his masterpieces: the Réflexions sur les préjugés qui s'opposent au progrès et à la perfection de l'inoculation (1764) and the Nouvelles réflexions sur la pratique de l'inoculation (1767). He brings many observations on cancer and he is the first to describe the fracture of the lower end of the radius with posterior tilt published several decades before the description given by Abraham Colles, called the Pouteau-Colles fracture in France (and only Colles fracture outside France).
