Gondret presents among the first explanations of the effect of altitude (altitude sickness) on human physiology. He is the first to describe in this work what we know today as the hyperbaric chamber in order to treat people suffering from acute altitude sickness.

François Leuret (1797-1851) and Jean-Louis Lassaigne (1800-1859) highlight for the first time that the contact of an acid product with the mucosa of the duodenum triggers pancreatic secretion in dogs.
In addition, this book is known for the error made about the nature of acid in gastric juice, which is not lactic but hydrochloric (based on researches by Prout and Tiedmann).
