Bordeu, a graduate of Montpellier and the principal representative of clinical medicine in eighteenth-century France, was the chief representative if not the founder of the school of Vitalism.
In this work, today considered as one of the most important works in the history of cell theory, Bordeu "described connective tissue - under the name mucous tissue - showing its role in exchanges, the phenomena of nutrition, and the mechanical equilibrium of organs and tissues" (DSB, II, p. 301).

Louis-René Desbois de Rochefort (1750-1786) is a French doctor, "he shone as a professor, although he was not very methodical in the exposition of his doctrines, and little punished in his speech, he did not publish any work of during his lifetime. " (Medarus).
This posthumous work is compiled by Corvisart who also signs the praise of Desbois.
Our edition follows the original and corrects the title page which indicated 1779 instead of 1789.

First separate and first edition in french of this work in which Spallanzani confirmed earlier doctrines of the solvent property of the gastric juice and discovered the action of the saliva in digestion. He stated that gastric juice can act outside the body and can prevent or inhibit putrefaction. He obtained gastric juice by tying a sponge on a piece of string, then allowing it to be swallowed.

Claude Pouteau (1724-1775) was a surgeon who practiced at the Hôtel-Dieu in Lyon.
He brings many observations on cancer and he is the first to describe the fracture of the lower end of the radius with posterior tilt published several decades before the description given by Abraham Colles, called the Pouteau-Colles fracture in France (and only Colles fracture outside France).

Fontana relates numerous experiments in which he injects venoms and poisons into animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, etc.). The majority of the work is devoted to a systematic study of viper venom but it also addresses plant poisons, such as Ticunas (probably Curare) reported on poisoned arrows from the Amazon. He is thus one of the first to approach toxicology experimentally.

Thomas Goulard (1697 -1784) was, towards the middle of the 18th century, royal demonstrator of surgery and anatomy in Montpellier and major surgeon of the military hospital of this city.
We owe him "the water of Goulard", nickname taken by the solution of lead acetate that Goulard recommends, under the name of Saturn extract in his works, against a whole anthology of diseases.

Percivall Pott (1714-1788), was an English surgeon specializing in the treatment of hernias. He is notably the first to describe congenital hernias. The major part of these surgical works is moreover devoted to the description and the treatment of the various hernias.
The third and last volume was published fifteen years after the first two, in 1792 by Barrois. The translator wishing to complete the Works after the death of Pott (of which he made a short biography in preliminary).
We find in this last volume the description of the curvature of the spine, which will be called Pott'disease (tuberculous arthritis of the intervertebral joints).
