Joseph Roques (1772-1850) is a botanist who remains famous for his beautiful illustrated editions of flora which will remain references in the 19th century.

Our copy is complete with 133 finely watercolor plates gathering hundred's of botanical subjects (we also have the errata leaves on volume II which is often missing).
The author tells us in his preliminary speech that the execution of the engravings "was entrusted to Artists of distinguished merit". The result is a delicacy of the illustrations which clearly stood out from the lot of botany textbooks of the time.

A magnificent work, but also scientifically rigorous.
Finding that most of the medical floras of the time flirted with charlatanism, Roques has here selected only plants whose medicinal properties have been proven during his practice of medicine in Montpellier and gives their precise use.
To reach both the general public and scientists, he gives for each of the plants the popular name, the scientific name as well as their positions in the classification systems of Linnaeus, Tournefort and Jussieu. It is thus one of the last floras using this triple classification, an unified system being imposed in the modern era.

Alexandre Brongniart (1770-1847) is a French scientist well-known and recognized for his research in mineralogy. He succeeded René Just Haüy (one of the founders of geometric crystallography), to the chair of mineralogy at the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle of Paris.
As soon as it was published, this book became a classic in this field and was as a reference for students.

Erasmus Darwin, Charles Darwin's grandfather, was a British physician, poet, and naturalist.
In Zoonomy, he proposed a classification of diseases based on the excitability of fibers, a physiological theory of the time.
The work also discussed early ideas about the evolution of species, suggesting that all living things might have descended from a common ancestor, anticipating some of the theories that his grandson would later develop, including that of sexual selection.

Darwin's work is preceded by "l'Analyse raisonnée de la Zoonomie de Darwin" published in 1807.

French translation by Jacques-Joseph Baudrillart of the reference book by Friedrich August Ludwig von Burgsdorf, a German forest specialist famous throughout Europe. The first volume contains a summary of the forest code, a general section on natural history, and the description of several hundred plant species found in forests and woods. In the second, there are chapters containing introductions to geometry, mechanics, and civil and naval construction. The tree to be felled is considered to provide parts useful for shipbuilding. It should be noted that the work comes three years after the defeat at Trafalgar, where the English had annihilated the French fleet.

Saissy was a doctor of medicine in Paris and then became a major surgeon of the Royal Company of Africa where he practiced military medicine in Algeria. Back in Lyon, he was accepted into the College of Surgery in 1789 and then a doctor of medicine in Valence. He practiced the art of childbirth in Lyon and published in 1808 a study on hibernating animals which earned him a prize at the Institute. From 1810 onwards, he devoted himself to ear diseases.

An important work and comprehensive treatise on natural and mineral waters. The first part covers internal and external uses of fresh water, seawater, and different kinds of mineral water. The major portion of the book describes the principal spas of Europe in alphabetical order, including chemical analyses of the waters. The last section gives detailed directions for the preparation of artificial mineral waters, with plates showing apparatus for making hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and hydrogel sulphide. The machine designed by L.A. Planche for making carbonated mineral waters under pressure is described.

This work was submitted to the Academy of Sciences in 1812, but didn't win the price and wasn't printed in the memory of the academy. It thus appears here for the first time .
It deal with the determination of the absolute zero and the specific heat of gas.
Presentation copy of Antoine César Becquerel to his grandson Henry with this : "Donné à mon petit fils henry, qu'il conserve cela en souvenir de mes trois premiers mémoires publiés en 1819 et du tendre attachement que je lui porte".

The subject, on the border between natural history and philosophy, consists in applying a rigorous analogy between animal forms and human psychology. Da Gama Machado was a commander and gentleman of the Royal House of the King of Portugal; he lived surrounded by his birds, which he cherished.

Perceval de Loriol (1828-1908) was a Swiss palaeontologist and stratigrapher, who worked during fourty years at the Natural History Museum of Geneva. He was one of the founders of the Schweizerische Paläontologische Gesellschaft.

The Salève is particularly rich in fossils. There are more than 700 species of invertebrates in the interval from the Upper Jurassic to the Quaternary, the study of which is far from being completed.
This work by Loriol remains an important reference on the subject.
