MABLY, Gabriel Bonnot de.
Des principes des négociations, pour servir d'introduction au droit public de l'Europe, fondés sur les traités.
La Haye, s.n., 1757.

First edition.
Gabriel Bonnot de Mably was Condillac's brother, although today less known than his parent, his innovative work of political philosophy places him among the precursors of what will become communism. In particular, he proposed to limit land ownership rights.
As a fine geopolitical analyst, he published his Treaty of Negotiations at the start of the Seven Years' War, after the overthrow of the alliance which will set Europe (and the world) on fire.
"His concepts of power, of world legal order, of moralizing the relations between people, peoples and states, undoubtedly still have a lot to teach us." Florence Gauthier, Extract from the preface for the reissue of the text in 2003
Our copy bearing the arms of Emmanuel Dieudonné de Hautefort (1700-1777), a diplomat who was french ambassador to Vienna from 1749 to 1752 and who was therefore at the heart of European diplomacy in this troubled period of the 18th century. It was indeed during this period that negotiations between France and Austria began to initiate a European diplomatic revolution.

Book relating the conquest of Mexico by Cortes. The author's will is to correct Antonio de Solis's History of the Conquest of Mexico by redacting uncertain or improbable facts.
"The customs, the characters, all the main events, the only ones worthy of passing down to posterity, are preserved; the order of the times are respected. Handwritten copy of a work published anonymously by Pierre Marteau in 1688. Barbier attributes the book to Gratien de Courtilz but adds: "Dubious".
The content is rather discourteous towards the monarchs, of whom inglorious episodes are recounted: the lack of merit of Louis XIII (Richelieu having governed for him), Louis XIV preferring the beds of his mistresses to the battlefields... This doubtless explains why handwritten copies were able to circulate under the cloak of the laughers. In fact, two other similar handwritten copies can be found in public libraries.
What remains is a very pretty manuscript, in a perfectly legible late 17th century handwriting.
MALEBRANCHE, Nicolas.
De la Recherche de la Vérité.
Paris, Bordelet, 1749.

During the publication of this treatise (first ed. : 1675), the first published by Malebranche, his contemporaries especially retained Cartesianism: dualism of thought and extension, rule of evidence, method using the Regulae of Descartes, influence of Dioptrics and the Treatise on Man, Cartesian physics. Even the concept of the soul, a simple occasion for the movements of the body, could be drawn from the Cartesians La Forge and Cordemoy. Malebranche still appears as one of many Cartesians trying to relate to Augustinianism. The break with Cartesianism came with the publication of Enlightenments on the Search for Truth (1678). Until then centered on man, Malebranche's thought here operates a theocentric reversal. From now on, everything starts from God. All physical relationships, like all moral values, are only the expression of an immutable Order.
Many figures in the text.

First french edition.
Translated from Polish by the pimple of Solignac.
In 1736, at the end of a war of succession which opposed French and Russian interests, Stanislas I, King of Poland, abdicated.
It is therefore as a free-speaking citizen that he writes his observations on the government of Poland.
Prince philosopher he writes in his preface:
"[our ancestors] established a fair balance between the power of Majesty, & the rights of liberty. They claimed that our Kings by the Majesty of their character, could contain liberty to prevent it from going as far as license, and that liberty, by the authority of our constitutions, could repress the ambition of our kings, if it ever led them to despotism. This salutary order no longer exists.".

This book is a satire of the political and gallant intrigues of the court of Louis XIV, in the form of false "Mémoires" (Persia becomes France and all the protagonists are named with oriental names). The key to the understanding is given at the end of the text.
In reality, this satirical book deals with the History of France and Europe from the death of Louis XIV to the reign of Louis XV.
It is also the first book, in which the story of the famous "Iron Mask" is mentionned.
Following the publication, the author was jailed in La Bastille.

First edition.
One of the most beautiful illustrations of the Bible in the eighteenth century.
This remarkable iconograph of the Bible in which Gérard Hoet and Bernard Picart mainly participated includes 214 full-page plates (29 double-page), the legend of which is written in Hebrew, English, German, Latin, French and Dutch.
The two frontispieces are captioned in French, the rest of the text is written in Dutch. Each chapter ends with a beautiful engraved cul-de-lampe.
This set of prints was first started by Picart in 1720 with the assistance of the Dutch painter Gérard Hoet, for what would undoubtedly become the pinnacle of the "Figures of the Bible". The Figures of the Bible are collections of engravings, which represent or signify Scripture through cycles of prints covering the entire Bible, a single Testament, or even a single biblical book. It is a genre that became popular with printing in the sixteenth century.
Pierre de Hondt, recovers the engravings of Picart, who with his multilingual legends already had a desire for European distribution, to accompany texts by Pierre Saurin (cf. Brunet). Everything is newly decorated with typographic ornaments.
Beautiful copy of Talleyrand at Chateau de Valençay with his ex libris in each volume.
