"This satirical book [...] is generally considered today as the work by Dom Labadie, a religious conversant of the Congregation of Saint-Maur, helped by the abbot Prévost who would have reviewed and published this book. It is likely that the abbot only prepared and reviewed the edition of 1725.
It is said that Labadie, repenting himself for having written such a text, died while enjoining to burn all his writings.
What is certain is that this very sharp satire, directed against the Regent, had been inspired by a acrimonious license well displaced by the pen of a monk; the author had obviously obeyed to a feeling of personal hate." (Drujon, pp. 111-122)

The key of the understanding for this satirical book is given in the "Ducatiana" (Amsterdam 1738).
That key is written on the endleaves of our copy.
