A Floating City refers to the immense ship "Great Eastern" crossing the Atlantic between Liverpool and New York. In this novel, Jules Verne draws inspiration from his own experience, having himself made this crossing on the real British "SS Great Eastern", then the largest and largest transatlantic liner of the time. This ship, where thousands of people and the crew live together, forms a micro society and therefore a real “floating city”. An adventure novel follows. Three Russian scientists (Mathieu Strux, Nicolas Palander, Michel Zorn) and three English scientists (Colonel Everest, Sir John Murray, William Emery), are responsible for working together, and have the mission of measuring a meridian arc. Against this scientific background, a friendship and an infriendship are created. The whole thing was complicated by the start of the Crimean War (1853-1856), which pitted Russia against an Ottoman, French, English and Sardinian coalition.

The story takes place in the near future, where the world is dominated by science and technology. A group of scientists and gunsmiths, led by Michel Ardan, decide to move the Earth on its axis by firing a cannon so gigantic that the tilt of the globe will vary enough to expose the Arctic ice floes to the sun. The idea is to be able to exploit the coal mines which are supposed to be present in the subsoil of the North Pole. The project is ambitious and risky, but Ardan is convinced that it is feasible.

This work brings together the famous adventures of Phileas Fogg around the world and the short story Doctor Ox. This short story full of humor, where the author tells the story of the life of a peaceful village in Flanders, which will be disturbed by the invention of Doctor Ox and his assistant Ygene. A fun little allusion, the combination of the two names forms the word “oxygen”. These two titles are followed by four short stories.

This adventure novel by Jules Verne perfectly illustrates the famous proverb: "Money does not make happiness.". Indeed, the hero Kin-Fo, very rich but unable to know happiness or to feel emotions, confronts the idea of death, when he believes he is ruined. He then makes a pact with his philosopher friend Wang, who promises to kill him one day and disappears afterwards. As a result, the hero realizes that he is still wealthy, that he no longer wants to die, but rather to marry his beloved and enjoy life. Unfortunately, Wang is nowhere to be found to cancel his promise. It is therefore by trying to find him in the four corners of China, that the hero understands the true value of life.
Double volume edition followed by "Cing Cents Millions de la Begum" and "Les Révoltés de la Bounty".

Jules Verne takes up here a known theme, "the Robinsonade", a term coming from the famous novel "Robinson Crusoe", by Daniel Defoe, published in 1719. In this learning novel, a young man from a very good family is determined to undertake a long sea voyage to New Zealand. Unfortunately confronted with the sinking of the ship, he will have to learn to survive on a lost island, populated by natives, with as his only companion his posture and dance teacher.
Subsequently, Le Rayon-Vert is a very different novel. Its title comes from a Scottish legend, which says that those who are lucky enough to observe it, it would allow them to see clearly into their hearts and those of others. This green ray really exists. It's an emerald glow that forms when the sun disappears just at sea level.

A work which caused a sensation upon its release, taking up the ideas of Rousseau, this novel is in line with the myth of the Good Savage.
Driven by the Spanish invasion, an Indian takes refuge in an unknown valley in South America with his two young children. He raises them in the bosom of good nature, in innocence and virtue, and they all live happily until they welcome into their health a young European who brings into this Eden, like the serpent of Genesis, the vices of civilization.
