Third edition in french, quite rare and printed by Daniel Elzevier (Berhman sup.77)
Descartes considered the human body to be a material machine, directed by a rational soul.
He conceived its functioning based solely on the laws of mechanics, without incorporating metaphysical principles that could not be verified by experiment.
Nearly four centuries later, in the era of transhumanism, this "Traité de l'Homme" has aroused renewed interest in the fields of neuroscience and cognitive science.

The Dodechedron of Fortune, named after the twelve-sided die used to cast oracles and the medieval goddess of Fortune, was a divinatory game, now called “The Magic Mirror of Jehan de Meung.”
This game consisted of choosing questions about the future and finding their answers using a special die, whose twelve faces correspond to the twelve houses of the sky and offer a number that refers to a horoscope or advice.
The two fold-out tables, each 12 by 12 squares, show the signs of the zodiac on the abscissa and the planets on the ordinate, each corresponding to a number on the die. Each square refers to an oracle in the book.

Passionate about astronomy, he was a member of the Société astronomique de France from 1904. In this work, Belot proposes a theory of the formation of the solar system in which he hypothesizes a nebulous proto-sun entering into violent contact with a larger nebula and explains that such an encounter is at the origin of planetary systems and their organization according to a logarithmic spiral on the diagram in which the planets of this system are distributed by vortical absorption and concretion of the dust of the jostled nebula.

The "Traité d'algèbre" is the most important work of Rolle.
He invented the notation n √ x to the nth root of x, which is still used today.
His most important contribution, however, is the part where he introduced the concept of "cascades". Let the polynomial equation P (x) = 0 with real roots a and b, then built polynmoe P '(x) he calls the first "cascade" as P' (a) = (ba) Q (b) where Q (x) is a polynomial of degree less. Now P '(x) is call the first derivative of P (x).
Rolle then built second cascade, the second derivative, and so forth to find all the roots of the polynomial.
According to our research, there have been several changes during the printing of the "Traité d'Algèbre".
Copie's with the wrong date (MDCLXC) as our copy, then corrected (M.DC.XC).
Copie's with the sheets FF and FFII (pages 223-226) replaced as in our copy by a single sheet Ff (paged 267/266 error).
Our copy is after adding the FF leaf, but before changing the wrong date on title page.

In the first part Dutens explains his system of classification whereby the finest and most durable of gemstones are dubbed "oriental" while those of lesser quality and hardness receive the title of "occidental," thus perpetuating in a highly popular and widely distributed work these unfortunate and misleading terms that persisted in use well into the last century. Some generalities on gemstones also appear here as curious lore, origin of gemstones, and other topics, followed by separate chapters on the major gemstones beginning with diamond. The latter chapter records recent experiments in France and elsewhere on the combustibility of diamond, one such experiment he personally observed. The second part describes lesser gemstones, mainly massive types, used mostly in cabochons or in the manufacture of small to large ornamental articles or decorations.

First edition.
Infantry course given by Colonel Philippe Pétain at the War School in 1911.
Major document for understanding the strategic thinking of the future hero of Verdun.
This course was only rediscovered and studied in 1960 by General Jean Delmas and published for the first time in 2010 by Editions du Cosmogone.
Pétain taught the infantry course at the War School between 1908 and 1911. His course is divided into three parts: the first two, of around a hundred pages each, are devoted to the story and study of combat. infantry that Pétain considers exemplary (Auerstedt in 1806, Saint-Privas in 1870). The third part, of only fifty pages, offers an uncompromising analysis of the infantry regulations in use in the French army between 1870 and 1902. It promotes a change in the doctrine of use of the infantry which must no longer expose itself to enemy fire as the Napoleonic vision of combat wanted.
Through its concern to spare the blood of men, this course clearly announces the Pétain of 1917-1918.
