Massenet sets the heroes of this spring of 1799 to music and leaves us the music sheets.
Jules Clarétie who writes the preface tells us: "[...] Among these books, I do not know, I repeat it, of more original than this one. It seems that all the arts wanted to fraternize in these pages and find themselves, under the same cover, like the heroes of Floréal under the same spring sky. ".

The memoirs from beyond the grave were published partly in episodes in "La Presse" in the last quarter of 1848. The Belgian publisher Tarride (which in 1850 was renamed "Librairie du Panthéon") compiled these episodes to deliver an urgent edition of the first parts of the Mémoires (which corresponds here to the first four parts) only a few weeks before the original in-8 edition by Penaud begins to be printed.
The rest of the publication of the original by Penaud will last until 1850, and Tarride will give a counterfeit edition in the process.
Our copy is full of the twenty volumes published, the first four of which can therefore be considered as a pre-original edition.

The story of the four Aymon sons is a legendary tale, which was originally a gesture song from the French Carolingian era. The four heroes, sons of Duke Aymon, are introduced to the emperor Charlemagne and will live many adventures accompanied by an enchanter and a magical horse.
Their adventures are finely illustrated by Eugène Grasset (1845-1917), one of the representatives of Art Nouveau. It combines, with delicacy and simplicity, iconography inspired by the Middle Ages and the Knighthood with Art Nouveau style (with stylized forms and characteristic ornamental motifs such as flowers).
