"Les Caractères ou les Moeurs de ce siècle" by the French moralist Jean de la Bruyère (1645 - 1696) is one of the major works of French literature.
The first edition dates from 1688, the following nine editions from 1688 to 1696 are increased with each publication of new texts.
This edition contains 46 characters that had not yet been published (Cydias, Clitophon, Antagoras, etc.), as well as the Reception Speech at the Académie française which is attached for the first time to the Characters.

The dedication to Louis XIII occupies no fewer than 54 sonnets.

Beautiful copy of this famous industrial binding produced between 1933 and 1955 by Joseph Taupin, under the pseudonym Jotau. The boards and the back are molded in a mass-dyed resin, close to bakelite, pollopas. Flats and backs are articulated by a rod. This particularly brittle resin was quickly abandoned and few copies reach us without damage, as is the case with the book we are offering.

Maurice Édouard Le Glay (1868-1936) was a French colonial soldier and writer. A defender of Berber culture, he was one of the main instigators of the Berber Dahir of May 16, 1930, which aimed to preserve the traditional autonomy of the Berber tribes of Morocco. Moroccan nationalist circles criticized him for having inspired a policy of division, pitting the Berbers against the Arabs.
One of the 500 copies on Hollande Van Gelder vellum, ours No. 332.
A very fine copy in an Arabist binding, possibly of Omani manufacture.

Performance by the printer Didot who fit the entire text of Cervantes into a single tiny volume. As Brunet remarks, it is not easy to read, and Didot printed a more convenient two-volume edition a few years later. The work was commissioned by Joachim Maria de Ferrer, a Spanish statesman, who said Rius, had this edition distributed to his friends.
Most of the copies encountered are covered in a romantic binding by Simier (various variants).

Rare binding with the arms of François-Auguste de Thou (1604-1642), his coat of arms on the covers, flies on the boxes. Eldest son of Jacques-Auguste de Thou, François-Auguste succeeded his father as Grand Master of the King's Library in 1617. take an active part in it himself; he was however condemned to death in Lyon and beheaded on September 12, 1642 on the Place des Terreaux. He had inherited his father's library, which he kept carefully and which passed after his death to his younger brother, Jacques-Auguste. He had the volumes struck, the paternal collection of which he augmented with the simple arms of the de Thou.

A French woman of letters and little-known writer, Antoinette Deshoulières frequented the salon of Mademoiselle de Scudéry.
She was nicknamed the "Tenth Muse" by her contemporaries.
She was the first French woman to be a member of the Academy. So, of course, we're not talking about the Académie Française (which nevertheless read one of her poems in a session in 1690), but the Académie des Ricovrat.
This copy is bound in fine Jansenist full morocco by Chambolle-Duru.
