CHAMPOLLION, Jean François.

First edition of the two major work of Champiollin, bound completely in one contemporary full calf.
1. Lettre à M. Dacier. Paris. 1822. Champollion's seminal work, which first announced the deciphering of the Rosetta Stone, provides the key to reading Egyptian hieroglyphics and gave birth to modern Egyptology. This seminal work is undoubtedly the most important philological work ever written.
2. Précis du système hiéroglyphique Paris. 1824. Two years after his “Lettre à M. Dacier,” Champollion presents here for the first time in its entirety the deciphering of hieroglyphics.
The Rosetta Stone, brought back by the Napoleonic expeditions to Egypt, gave the same text in three different languages, it is the key that gave Champollion the understanding of the language of the ancient Egyptians.
After laying down the principle of phonetic writing in 1822 in his Letter to M. Dacier, he continued his work and his demonstrations until he had an intimate knowledge of this language: "It is a complex system, a writing at the same time figurative, symbolic and phonetic, in the same text, the same sentence, I would almost say in the same word"
His Precis of the hieroglyphic system gives us with many examples an unprecedented understanding of hieroglyphs, thus cutting the grass under the feet of his opponents (and competitors) such as Thomas Young.
The discovery of Champollion suddenly gave humanity access to three millennia of its history.

Rare first latin edition of this famous description of Africa.
Born Al Hassan Ibn Mahommed Al Wezaz Al Fasi probably in Granada in about 1494, the author received a great part of his education at Fez, later travelling through most of northern Africa between 1507-1520.
He undertook his most famous series of journeys across the Sahara into modern day Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Chad between 1513 and 1515.
Later he travelled to Constantinople and Egypt, and while travelling home from there in 1520 was captured by pirates and presented to Pope Leo X in Rome.
There he converted to Christianity, was baptized and adopted his Christian name.
First published in Italian in 1550, this first Latin edition was the basis for the English translation of 1600.

Two important works from Condorcet.
1- "Essai sur la Constitution" : Scarce fist edition of the Condorcet's "most important political work" (Badinter Condorcet).
It is one of the fundamental texts in French political history and "the most important book of Constitutional Law that was published at that time and even since" (Allengry, Condorcet guide de la Révolution Française).
In this work, Condorcet is one of the first authors to claim the right to vote for women.
2. "Sur la nécessité de faire ratifier la Constitution par les citoyens", is less known but important, since Condorcet studies the question of whether, and under what conditions, a nation may confer upon an assembly the power to give it a constitution or to accept it on its behalf.

Monumental impression for the description of the Moulins bridge built from 1754 to 1762 under the direction of Louis de Règemortes, engineer of bridges and roads: Plans, sections, elevations and maps.
Note the impressive fifth plank measuring over 1.80m long representing the foundations of the bridge.
"The work that has illustrated his name is the construction of the Moulins bridge, for which several unsuccessful attempts had been made in the previous century. The success of the project drawn up by Louis de Règemorte is mainly due to the establishment of a general masonry base. , strongly defended against the action of water, with unsinkable longitudinal levees attached to the wedges, to prevent the disastrous effect of scouring and flooding which had brought the ruin of the works undertaken on the same point from 1679 to 1689. " Tarbé de Saint-Hardouin (Biographical notes on the engineers of the bridges and roads since the creation of the body, in 1716, until our days, Baudry, 1884)
The now "Pont Règemortes" still crosses the Allier more than 250 years more late proof of the success of the engineer.

Original manuscripts.
Rare and well-preserved set of two constitutional history courses given at Sciences Po Paris in 1886 by the founders of the school: Emile Boutmy and Alexandre Ribot.
Perfectly readable and careful manuscripts by a writer who will remain unknown who was a listener of Emile Boutmy's course on the Constitution of the United States in May-June 1886 and the course on the French Constitution since 1789 given by Alexandre Ribot in February-March 1886.
Created by Emile Boutmy in the aftermath of the 1870 defeat and the Paris Commune, the École Libre des Sciences Politiques (now known as Sciences-Po) aimed to teach political science as a positive science. She will form the elite of french politicians until today.
1886 was the last year in which Boutmy gave his course on the Constitution of the United States; we know a transcription of it in the notes left by Pierre de Coubertin who was also a listener of this course the same year. A comparison of the transcription of Coubertin's notes and our manuscript leads us to believe that our collection is more faithful (seems to be a word for word transcription) of Boutmy's teaching.
Alexandre Ribot's course on the French Constitution (second part of a more extensive course on European constitutions) leaves an important part on the birth of the Third Republic whose constitutional laws were only passed in 1875.

Infantry course given by Colonel Philippe Pétain at the War School in 1911.
Major document for understanding the strategic thinking of the future hero of Verdun.
This course was only rediscovered and studied in 1960 by General Jean Delmas and published for the first time in 2010 by Editions du Cosmogone.
Pétain taught the infantry course at the War School between 1908 and 1911. His course is divided into three parts: the first two, of around a hundred pages each, are devoted to the story and study of combat. infantry that Pétain considers exemplary (Auerstedt in 1806, Saint-Privas in 1870). The third part, of only fifty pages, offers an uncompromising analysis of the infantry regulations in use in the French army between 1870 and 1902. It promotes a change in the doctrine of use of the infantry which must no longer expose itself to enemy fire as the Napoleonic vision of combat wanted.
Through its concern to spare the blood of men, this course clearly announces the Pétain of 1917-1918.
