Counterfeit edition published before the original.
The memoirs from beyond the grave were published partly in episodes in "La Presse" in the last quarter of 1848. The Belgian publisher Tarride (which in 1850 was renamed "Librairie du Panthéon") compiled these episodes to deliver an urgent edition of the first parts of the Mémoires (which corresponds here to the first four parts) only a few weeks before the original in-8 edition by Penaud begins to be printed.
The rest of the publication of the original by Penaud will last until 1850, and Tarride will give a counterfeit edition in the process.
Our copy is full of the twenty volumes published, the first four of which can therefore be considered as a pre-original edition.

These memoirs, which mix dialogues and interrogations, entertained the whole of Paris, including Madame Du Barry, and were played almost everywhere in the cafés and on the boulevards, because they constitute a formidable comedy in which the lie ends up being revealed.
