Gerard van Swieten (1700-1772) was a Dutch physician and scientist recognized at his time. He was one of the well-known students of Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738).
Boerhaave was a Dutch botanist, doctor and chemist, who changed medical didactics. Thanks to him, the University of Leiden became the first medical center in Europe in the early eighteenth century. Bohn was one of the most distinguished physicians of the seventeenth century. He works on all branches of medical science, but he became famous for the works he composed on the physiology and forensic science.
Fourth edition of "Circulus anatomical-physiologicus" - "complete system of physiology in which the author takes the man with the original formation of the embryo, and the following functions in the natural order of development. Partisans reserved the iatrogenic mechanism, it admits as proven the idea that the movement of the heart can be compared to that of a hydraulic machine, but he blames the views of Borelli, that during systole of the ventricles, the atria contract and close completely .... "(Dezeimeris).
"Bohn experimented on the decapited frog, declaring the reflex phenomena to be entirely material and mechanical, the general view of the time being that "vital spirits" were present in the nerve-fluid. Bohn showed that the nerves do not contain a "nerve juice". (Morton).

John Aikin insists on the role of hospitals in the advancement of medical science. First of all, with regard to teaching. Since the founding in 1658 of a clinical school at the Leiden hospital, the use of hospitals as a teaching ground had continued to grow, which Aikin was pleased about and which others sometimes deplored as having disadvantages for the sensitivity, or even the health, of patients. The organization of hospitals as places of teaching and research is the source of our current university hospitals.

In the second half of the XVIIIth century the inoculation for smallpox became a discussed practice, able to involved in the debate not only the scientific community but also the social and political milieu. Gatti arrived in Paris in 1760 where he became famous thanks to his masterpieces: the Réflexions sur les préjugés qui s'opposent au progrès et à la perfection de l'inoculation (1764) and the Nouvelles réflexions sur la pratique de l'inoculation (1767).
