Ouvrage fondateur de l'ichtyologie moderne.
Artedi qui s'est noyé en 1735 à Amsterdam, est ici édité à titre posthume par Carl von Linné qui avait hérité des manuscrits de ce dernier.
La classification est basée sur un ordre, puis un genre et une espèce.
Artedi distingue ainsi quatre ordres de poissons et un pour les cétacés, 47 genres et 230 espèces.
Ensemble bien complet de ses cinq parties.
