Wilhelm Hofmeister (1824-1877) est un botaniste allemand, autodidacte, très reconnu de la seconde moitiè du XIXème siècle.
Dans cet ouvrage, il met en évidence le fonctionnement de la fécondation des plantes non fleuries ( les cryptogames).
