DESCAMPS, Jean-Baptiste.

Paris, Claude Antoine Jombert, 1753-1764.

First edition.
Still useful reference work by the French painter and art writer Descamps (1714-1791), containing hundreds of chronologically ordered biographies, from Van Eyck (1366) to François Krause (1706).
Titles in red and black. Ill. of 1 frontisp. engraved by Lebas, 2 dedication vignettes engraved by Le Mire after Descamps, 168 headband portraits engraved by Ficquet, Gaillard, Legrand, and others, after Descamps, Eisen and Campion, some signed at the tip. Our ex. contains at t. IV the reprint, not mentioned by Cohen but which is not uncommon, of the tables of all volumes with a phonetic transcription of the names in order to "make pronunciation easier for Francis" (pp. V-vii).

We join a fifth volume linked identically by the same workshop:
DESCAMPS, Voyage Pittoresque de la Flandre et du Brabant, Paris, Desaint, 1769
xxii- (2) -328- (12) pages and 5 engravings out of text and 1 folding map.
This account of a trip made in 1768, designed by Descamps as a complement to his “Life of painters”, offers a detailed list of the paintings kept in convents, churches and private mansions in Belgium and northern France (Lille, Saint-Omer ...). Praising the richness of our well-preserved collections, he called for standards of protection to be set up to protect them from the public.
