Work commissioned by the Marquis de Nieuil, squadron leader of the naval armies from Pierre Louis Buor de La Charoulière (1736-1803) then Captain of the ships.
An exceptional naval tactician, he stood out in the battles of Ouessant and the Antilles where he defeated in 1780 the formidable English admiral Rodney. Despite the defeat of the French fleet, he also distinguished himself during the Battle of the Saintes in 1782 where Rodney took his revenge.

The book is about how to communicate between ships in a fleet to coordinate naval tactics. One finds there in particular the tables with the specific signals for each ship of the French fleet of the time.

provenance: According to a note on the cover page this copy was given by the author to his nephew Marie Louis Buor de la Mulnière (1757-1806) known as the "Chevalier de Buor" who notably fought with his uncle during the battle of Chesapeake.
