Six parts in five 12mo (158x98 mm), frontispiece-l-336-(4) pages, portraict and 4 folding plates (including the Chinon's map) / (2)-viii-287-(5) pages / (2)-xix-272-(4) pages / (2)-lv-288-(4) pages / xvi-223-(5)-(2)-109-(33) pages. binding : Contemporary full calf, spine with six compartments. Last compartment gilden with arms (unidentified). Caps worn. Little tears on the folding map without loss.
First critical and commented edition of Rabelais, it was given by Le Duchat, in collaboration with La Monnoye. In our copy, the frontispiece and the portrait are well signed by W. de Broen, characteristic of the first printing. This edition is also adorned with 4 folding engravings including the map of Chinonais and a full-page engraving representing the dive bottle. This edition will be the reference throughout the 18th century.
