Clairaut's major work in which he demonstrates the theorem, known as "Clairaut's theorem", which relates the geometric flattening f on the surface of a rotating ellipsoid to a kinetic quantity (the geodynamic form factor J2) and to a dynamic quantity q, representing the ratio of centrifugal force to gravity at the equator. He thus mathematically demonstrates Newton's intuition of an Earth flattened at the poles.
