Duchenne de Boulogne (1806-1875) is one of the greatest clinicians of the 19th century and the founder of neurology.
He is also one of the pioneers in the use of electricity as an instrument for physiological experiments. The use of alternating current allows it to precisely stimulate only one muscle beam at a time.

references: Garrison-Morton [1995 & 614 (ed. 1855): "Duchenne classified the electrophysiology of the entire muscular system and summed up his findings in the above work. The application of his results to pathological conditions marks him as the founder of electrotherapy. An Album de photographies pathologiques was published in 1862 to accompany the text of the second edition, 1861. [...] Duchenne, most famous of the electrotherapists, employed faradic current in treating patients as early as 1830."].
