First edition.
Claude Louis Marie Henri Navier (1785-1836) was a French engineer and physicist, known for his contributions to fluid mechanics and elasticity theory. A member of the Institut, he taught at the École Royale des Ponts et Chaussées. This work is a collection of his lectures on the application of mechanics to construction, with sections on material resistance and machinery.
First part only —the only part published during the author's lifetime—contains the lectures on the strength of materials and on the construction of earthen, masonry, and timber-framed structures.
It was not until 1833 that the publisher Carilan-Goeury released the second edition of this first part, followed in 1838 by the first editions of the second and third parts.
