Second edition. B. Niewenglowski (1848-1929) was a Polish-French mathematician, Doctor of Science, former student of the École Normale Supérieure, professor of special mathematics at Lycée Saint-Louis and Lycée Louis-le-Grand, and member of the Higher Council of Public Instruction. His Cours d'algèbre (Course in Algebra) was an essential textbook for special mathematics classes and preparation for the highly selective entrance exams of the École Normale Supérieure and the École Polytechnique in the late 19th century.
