Vito Volterra (1860-1940) was a world-renowned Italian mathematician and physicist, a member of the Institute and professor at the University of Rome. His Leçons sur la Théorie Mathématique de la Lutte pour la Vie (Lectures on the Mathematical Theory of the Struggle for Life), edited by Marcel Brelot and published in the "Cahiers Scientifiques" collection directed by Gaston Julia, is a pioneering work in biomathematics. Volterra is considered one of the founders of the mathematical study of biological interactions, particularly predator-prey relationships and population dynamics.
