BODIN, Jean.
De la Démonomanie des sorciers.
Paris, Jacques du Puys, 1580.

The scarce first edition.
This work is considered as the best we have on Witchcraft.
Bodin believes in pacts with demons, in the remembrance of the dead and carnal copulation with devils. He also has, for his personal account, a familiar spirit that does not leave him, to advise him in all circumstances of life.
While at the religious point of view, Bodin was very tolerant, he is much harder with witches. Since in his refutation of the opinions of John Wier who claimed that sorcerers are more often sick or crazy and that they should not burn, Bodin expresses the desire to raise hundreds of wizards and witches for burning them itself.

Richard Mead (1673-1754), a physician and friend of Isaac Newton, attempts in this book to demonstrate the influence of gravitational forces on human health. Mesmer drew heavily on this book to write his doctoral thesis in 1766 (On the Influence of the Planets on the Human Body). The term "animal gravitation," taken from Mead, was later changed by Mesmer to "animal magnetism.".

Sébastien Michaelis (1543-1618), a Dominican priest, participated as vice-inquisitor in one of the most spectacular witchcraft trials of the great witch hunts that shook Europe at the turn of the 16th century.
The Avignon affair, as it would later become known, ended with the conviction and execution of eighteen individuals.
The trial, whose judgment Michaelis reproduces in his book, provided an opportunity to delve into the practices of witches and their dealings with demons: On which day is Satan celebrated? Why does the Devil appear in the form of a goat? Can human bodies fly? Why are there more witches than warlocks? These are among the questions to which the inquisitor provides answers.
In his conclusion—which would vanish from subsequent editions—the inquisitor wonders whether the witches' testimonies might simply be the product of "dreams and imaginations." However, even if they were dreams, our Dominican concludes that if imagination produced pleasure, then the witch is doubly guilty and deserves death!
This valuable copy previously belonged to Maurice Garçon (no. 135 in his sale catalog), a renowned collector specializing in demonology and witchcraft trials. He left a handwritten note on the endpaper, highlighting the significance of the conclusion.

Very rare manuscript of spiritualist session reports.
The spiritualist wave arrived in France in 1854, and spread to all walks of life. We will remember, for example, the famous sessions of Victor Hugo in Guernsey...
In the following decades, all bourgeois families tried to turn the tables or dance. Methods of spiritualist contact are becoming more refined, we are seeing automatic writing methods appear in the presence or absence of a medium.
Very few of the sessions from this period have left written traces; the manuscript we present is the transcription of automatic writing sessions that took place between October 1866 and March 1867 in the Moret family. The first sessions took place in the presence of the medium Ms. Parain then in Bordeaux with the help of Ms. Benoit. Mrs. X. (unidentified) first contacted her grandfather Louis Pierre Moret. This is also why she transcribed the content of her communications in this notebook which belonged to her grandfather. The first communications are short, but little by little the mind gains confidence and the communications are longer. It was then his mother Marie Louise Moulins who “took up” the pen, then his father Moret. It is also amusing to note that the signatures of the spirits gradually become different.
The spirits advise their descendants to pray for them, to be charitable and above all to spread the ideas of spiritualism! We know that her husband tried a session but seems very skeptical...In a communication one of the spirits evokes the Other world which is organized into planets hierarchized according to the degree of wisdom, the summit seems to be the planet Juno .
70-page manuscript, quite fascinating to read!
The book is continued by another hand (probably at the beginning of the 20th century) who used it to note famous quotes and thoughts (out of 114 pages, around twenty leaves were cut from this part) then 250 blank pages remain.

Jean Guenebauld, a doctor from Dijon, discovered in his vineyards in 1598, a funerary urn which he believed to be of Druidic origin.
This urn is adorned with an epitaph in ancient Greek:
"Here, in the sacred land of Mithras, a mound covers the body of Chyndonax, high priest. Abstain from impiety at the sight of his redemptive tomb" (translation after W. Vollgraff)
The identity of the cult to the deity Mithras mentioned in the epitaph is still debated today, W. Vollgraff brings it closer to a cult dedicated to Aphrodite Ourania ( Vollgraff W. The awakening of Chyndonax . In: Classical Antiquity, Tome 18, Fasc. 1, 1949. pp. 55-78.).
