First edition.
The rediscovery of ancient paintings in Pompeii in the second half of the eighteenth century somewhat shook knowledge of pictorial techniques. Such preservation of the vividness of colors seemed mysterious, several avenues were put forward by Watin or Count Caylus and this revived European research in pigments and varnishes.
It is in this line that the work of Tingry, a Geneva chemist whose work is a reference in the field, falls.
The first part is devoted to the preparation of drying oils, resins, varnishes, pitch ... (with recipes, instruments and methodology) The second to the preparation of pigments including the use of copal varnish to obtain transparent colors.
