Very beautiful iconography of a picturesque China that Westerners rediscovered then, and which had not yet known the opium wars. There, you can find small trades (the porcelain mender), torture (the twisting of the ears!), Buildings or even a portrait of the Emperor Kien-Long.
The drawings are signed by the best illustrators of the time (Deveria, Schmitt, Schaal ...) and lithographed by Mlle Formentin's workshop.

The work will be published in two volumes bringing together 180 lithographs, it will be published in 30 deliveries from 1825 to 1839 which explains the great rarity of copies which will have been fully completed.
Ours presents the two frontispieces and the two title pages of the two volumes but only 18 color lithographs with the explanatory text opposite the 180.
