DANTAN, Jean Pierre (dit Dantan jeune). Les Dominotiers.

Cambrai, P. Levêque, 1848.

Folio (370x280 mm), (4)-8 pages and 56 lithographies with leaf of text.  binding : Contemporary wrappers. Tears on edges of paper. Fresh paper for the engravings, foxings on text leaves. Big tear on text leave XVI (without loss of paper).

First edition.
Set of caricatures of the members of the domino players' club who met from 1838 in the studio of sculptor Dantan. Dantan then produced small statues, caricatures of famous characters, whose style is given as one of Daumier's sources of inspiration. This album leaves no doubt on this point as the styles of Dantan and Daumier seem close.

The distribution was therefore restricted to club members only and each of the 70 copies had to be numbered and marked with one of the players on the title page. Our copy does not bear these indications, but a letter forgotten inside the book sent by the Ministry of the Interior to Edmond Laborie seems to designate this dominotier as the recipient of our copy (it is caricatured on plate xxiii).
