Michel Adanson a été le premier à analyser et à expliquer les fondements théoriques de la classification naturelle et, ce qui est encore plus important, à définir la méthode pratique à utiliser pour rechercher cette classification.
Dans cet ouvrage, Adanson proclame son mépris des "systèmes" et propose une classification naturelle fondée sur tous les caractères et non sur quelques caractères choisis arbitrairement, ce qui le met en conflit avec Linné".
