Joseph Bertrand (1822-1900) was a French mathematician, economist, and academician, a member of the Académie Française and permanent secretary of the Académie des Sciences. His work covers many fields, including number theory, mathematical physics, and probability theory. This book, dedicated to D'Alembert, is part of the "Great French Writers" collection, which aims to present leading figures in French thought and literature. Bertrand, as a prominent scholar of his time, was particularly qualified to address the work and life of Jean le Rond D'Alembert (1717-1783), a mathematician, physicist, and philosopher of the Enlightenment, co-editor of the Encyclopédie.
