Charles Sturm (1803-1855) was a French mathematician of Swiss origin, a member of the Institute, famous for his work on the theory of equations. His Cours d'analyse de l'École Polytechnique (Course in Analysis of the École Polytechnique) is a fundamental textbook that influenced the teaching of mathematical analysis in France in the 19th century. Volume Two, revised and corrected by E. Prouhet and followed by the elementary theory of elliptic functions by M. H. Laurent, shows the evolution of curricula and the integration of advanced topics into the École Polytechnique's program. Sturm's lectures were renowned for their rigor and clarity, influencing generations of mathematicians.
