R. Ferrier, an engineer of the Ponts et Chaussées, is the author of this work on electrodynamics. The preface was written by Paul Painlevé (1863-1933), an eminent French mathematician and statesman, a member of the Institute. The book explores ideas on electrodynamics during a transitional period in physics, where classical theories were confronted with new discoveries in quantum physics.
