Third edition. Jean-Baptiste Biot (1774-1862) was a French physicist, astronomer and mathematician who pioneered the use of polarized light for the study of solutions. This book contains the text of the public lessons he gave to the Faculty of Sciences of Paris, between 1817 and 1816, with some improvements made as an enrichment of certain concepts due to the scientific advance since 1817.
