Mme de Staël discovered Germany with Benjamin Constant during a trip at the beginning of the 19th century. She draws this work from it, a mine of observations on German society at that time. It also makes us discover the philosophy and German literature which is then in full effervescence (and which will dominate the century) with Kant, Goethe, Schiller.
