references: Heirs of Hippocrates [1103 : "Scarpa, a brilliant artist as well as a brilliant anatomist, was trained in anatomy by Morgagni at Padua and studied surgery at Bologna. At the age of twenty he became professor at Modena, and in 1783 he went to Pavia where he helped bring the University of Pavia to preeminence. His legacy includes works in otolaryngology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, neuroanatomy, and surgery. In this work, Scarpa describes the auditory and olfactory mechanisms of fishes, birds, reptiles, and man.
